The earrings, which are worn around the neck from the ear, are usually suspended using a ring or a drop that runs through the ear canal or, in modern times, usually through the skin around the neck. The power to decorate or change the shape of the ear seems to be almost universal. In general, the use seems to require a pair of earrings in pairs, the two ornaments are the same; but one earring is sometimes worn. (One ring was the most popular in Europe during the Renaissance and the Baroque.)

In the Orient, old earrings were worn by both men and women; In the West (including ancient Israel and Egypt) as a rule, they are considered to be only female ornaments. Between the Greek and Roman rings were worn only by women, and the masculine style they wore was often mentioned in ancient literature as an Asian tradition (i.e., the Middle East).

In a Greek tomb on the Crimea Peninsula (4th century BC), intricate and ornate rings have been found. Ornaments of the same class, more elaborate and artistic, were found in the tombs of ancient Etruria. Simple earrings, but with pearls and other gems, were the norm in Rome.

In Europe, earrings have become quite fashionable while wigs, coiffure, or headdresses cover the ears, as in the late 17th and 18th centuries. 20s, mainly for the introduction of cutting tools. The simple techniques of injury and ear piercing made piercing rings help as well.
